Gear lever tightened up

My 2.0 Dti has been brillantly reliable in the year I've had it but it has now developed an 'interesting' problem.

All was well when I parked it up for the night but the next morning when I went to drive off, the gear lever felt like it had tightened up. To get first gear, I have to really push the lever to the left before it will go in and reverse is also difficult. The lever also no longer self-centres when I take it out of gear and it generally feels stiff to move around.

I've popped the cover up and had a look but nothing is immediately obvious as being broken or worn. I've given it a good spray with lithium grease but it's made no difference.

I'm inclined to think it's the linkage or maybe the cables rather than the clutch or the gearbox as it drives normally when it's in gear and it's the same whether the engine is running or not.

Anyone had this problem or got any pointers as to where the problem might be..?

degraded oil in the gearbox? or due to the cold weather? the linkage and joint should be greased so if you've done that all I can think of is checking the oil, or linkage as you suggest.

Also should ask - does it do it with the engine off?
