Hi,
I'm looking to buy an MPV in the next 3 months. Options are CMax and the Zafira. Currently have 1 toddler, and hope to in the next 2 years add to our family. Looking for a car with lots of boot space as we like to go camping regularly. Must be diesel, 1.8 or above. Unlikely to use the 7 seats in a zafira regularly if i am honest, but looking for a car thats going to last 5 to 8 years so will likely do so in the future. Looking to spend 6.5k max, diesel with less than 60k on the clock and have privacy windows and at least partial leather. Driving style, I'm fairly sedate, but my wife drives everything like shes stolen it. Car will do a mix of short town trips and motorway miles. Hear a lot of horror stories for the zafira, certainly more than the cmax. If I go for a zafira, what should I be looking for? Many thanks in advance. Richard

The horror stories are the same for any car. If you do a search on the internet you will find just as many problems (if not more) with the c-max as the Zafira. The scary thing about the Fords are the loss of ABS and the turbo failing, which are much more expensive to fix than an alternator or having the DPF removed on the Zafira.
Ive had my DTI for over 10 years and only ever replaced brakes and tyres (other than service parts) and so far done 10K in my 2010 CDTI without any problems and nor do I expect any. Because I do so many miles (30,000 a year) I share the time between the two cars. You say you are doing a mix of short town trips and motorway miles, but how much exactly? If you are doing mainly local miles to drop of kids and go to work then steer clear of the Zafira diesels with a DPF fitted, they are designed for driving hard and fast, high revs and a lot of miles, otherwise the DPF and EGR valve will clog up and cause continuous regenerations which will put a strain on the alternator, thus why these fail. The 1.9 CDTI 120 and 150 are fast cars that should be treated as such, if you potter around town in them they will fail. I would recommend getting the remap or tuning box if you plan to tow anything as the extra torque is a godsend and the increased fuel economy more than pays for it. You can have this done at the VXR centre or buy a box from DTUK. If you want the leather option, you are more likely going to have the SRI or Elite models. Thanks for the tips Hatter.
miles wise it does about 50 to 60% of miles are on the motorway (usually around 15 to 20 minutes at time). Others are 10 to 20 mile town trips, very rarely travel anywhere that sits in traffic. Is there anyway of knowing if the DPF has been removed? No plans to tow, yet!

After the DPF is removed the obvious thing will be the normal soot thrown out the exhaust on starting from cold and during acceleration. But you would be able to see the DPF missing and the EGR blocked off or removed, there are videos on youtube and pictures on google that show you where they are. There are people on here who have had theirs removed, and should be able to help you, but so far I am going to stick with mine.

So would a good 5 min blast up the motorway keep the DPF and EGR from clogging?

The more you drive below 2000 revs the lower the temperature in the exhaust and DPF, which will mean a build up of particulates. A quick blast up the motorway may not clear it, but will help. When a regen happens I believe you need to keep above 2000 revs until the regen is complete, which can be for over 20 minutes.
A specialist DPF cleaner, as I have stated before, will reduce the temperature required to burn off the particulates and stop the DPF from clogging up, but that should not be relied upon, you still need to drive some miles. I do a minimum of 250 miles a week in mine, but recently because my DTI wont start in the cold ive been doing 500 miles. |

Regeneration - when the DPF gets so full of particulates that it must be cleared. The engine will increase fuel into the system to get the DPF up to a high enough temperature to burn off all the particulates, which will require a long run above 2000 revs. If this is not successful and done regularly the DPF and EGR will fail and need replacement.
