Hi all, I hope you can help me to figure out the issue with my 1993 1.8 petrol automatic.

I've had the EMS light on for the majority of the last 2 years, but never suffered any performance issues and it's always passed its MOT.

However, over the last couple of weeks the traction control light has been coming on intermittently. When it does, I feel a 'clunk' from the gearbox and it's as if the car is locked in a higher gear. I have to use lots of throttle to pull away, but then the car drives ok. Turn the engine off and everything is back to normal, but then eventually the light comes back on and I get the same 'high gear' issue.

Took it to a general garage and they cleared the faults and retested after the EMS and traction control lights came back on. Fault codes I'm getting are:
P0700
P1700
P0100
C0260

Garage suggested that it is a sensor in the gearbox that is faulty, which sounds as if it will probably be too expensive to fix, given the age of the car. Any suggestions please?

Thanks.

Hi, certainly not since I've had it in the last 3 years........

Update:
Local garage who ran diagnostics put me in touch with a specialist gearbox garage. Spoke to them, explained symptoms and gave them the fault codes and they said it wouldn't be the gearbox itself.
They put me in touch with an auto electrician who ran more in depth diagnostics. Problem is that the fault is intermittent and doesn't stay on, therefore almost impossible to diagnose exactly where the issue is. He's recommended I go back to the gearbox specialist and get the gearbox selector switch replaced. He said if that doesn't fix it, then I have to decide whether it's worth replacing other sensors/wiring due to the value of the car......
Any suggestions please - may changing the transmission fluid help?
